What is legacy giving?

.

Legacy giving is a thoughtful, planned way to support First Presbyterian's mission for generations to come. Through gifts made in your will, trust, or other assets, you can help ensure our faith community thrives far into the future.

Legacy gifts are acts of stewardship and faith—connecting your generosity today with the needs of tomorrow.

While many people think of including charitable bequests in a will or trust when considering Legacy Giving, there are several other ways to leave a legacy—some of which are outlined below.

Ways to Leave a Legacy

Wills & Bequests

A gift from a will or a living trust are two of the most common ways to create a legacy gift for the benefit of First Presbyterian. A bequest may include cash, specific property, or a share of the estate.

Retirement Plans

Gifts of retirement assets are another simple way to leave a gift by naming First Presbyterian as beneficiary of a percentage or the full amount of your Individual Retirement Account (IRA), 401k, or other qualified retirement plan.

Life Insurance

One of the easiest ways to support First Presbyterian through your estate is by naming it as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy—something you can often do online in minutes. You can also transfer ownership of a policy or purchase a new one with the church as the beneficiary. This kind of gift may offer tax benefits and is a great option if other giving methods aren't practical. It’s especially helpful for policies no longer needed for their original purpose, and may even allow you to create an endowment. Always consult your lawyer or advisor.

Real Estate and Nontraditional Assets

You might own valuable assets—such as artwork, business shares, or real estate—that you no longer need and wish to contribute to a meaningful cause. Donating them to First Presbyterian can help you avoid the complexities of selling them yourself and may reduce or eliminate tax obligations.
