I’M NEW

Welcome to First Presbyterian!

church_eric.webp

Since I began pastoring at First Pres in October of 2022, I’ve daily discovered examples of hard-working, passionate, community-focused women and men trying to live out their faith and make the world a better place.

They’re not very good at bragging, but start asking questions of the people in the pews here and you’ll hear remarkable stories of leadership, labor, and sacrifice, all done because they want to be co-workers with Christ in building up Hampton and the peninsula.

You can find more about what we believe as Presbyterians HERE, but in short: we love because God first loved us. We enact that core belief when we feed the hungry every Thursday, worship with our hearts on Sunday, and stretch our souls at small groups and bible studies throughout the week. We accept people of all genders, races, sexualities, abilities, and personalities to come to the table of God’s grace and to work with us to extend that grace to everyone. We’re very much not perfect, but that’s why we need each other, and you, to fulfill the mission God has set on our hearts.

We know that God shapes us most powerfully through relationships, so look for opportunities for connection and meeting others over coffee and Krispy Kreme on Sunday or during other gatherings throughout the week. We work hard to equip families with the tools to meet life’s challenges: building leadership in our youth and children who lead us in worship, forming our faith intergenerationally, and serving side by side, young and old...

The Spirit is at work in this place, calling us together with all our differences to be a witness to a divided world, so come: taste and see how God is using us, together, to make a difference.

Peace be with you,

Eric

What to Expect
WorshipPhoto00002.JPG
  • What should I wear?
The 9 am service is more casual than the 11 am service, yet you will find people at both services dressed in ties to t-shirts, sandals to suits. However you dress, we are happy to welcome you!
  • Is there parking nearby?
The church’s parking lot with a covered drop-off is on Victoria Blvd and is adjacent to the sanctuary. On-street parking is available on Victoria Blvd and South Armistead Ave.
  • Can children attend worship?
Children of all ages are welcome to attend either of the services. Childcare is available for infants through age 4 in room 204. Older kids are invited to the first 15 minutes of either service and can participate in the children’s message. After that, they can remain in worship or attend children’s church held in room 203.
  • How many worship services are there?
We have two worship services. The 9:00 am service is contemporary and features our praise band. There are family tables as well as comfortable chairs to sit in. The 11:00 service is held in the sanctuary and is traditional, although by no means stuffy. The music is from our hymnal and features our choir, magnificent organ, and piano. You will find that both services will renew you spiritually, invite you into a community of believers, and inspire you to dive into a deeper relationship with Christ.
  • Where is the church?
The church is located at 514 South Armistead Avenue Hampton, VA. [Link to Google Maps]. It is next door to the main public library, two blocks from Darling Stadium (home to local high school football games), and three blocks from the Hampton Yacht Club. Downtown Hampton is about one-half mile away. The church has a large lawn where a number of church activities take place.
  • What should I expect on my first visit?
You should expect to be greeted at the door by one of our friendly greeters who can answer your questions and guide you to the sanctuary or other areas of the church. There are two entrances to the building: one next to the parking lot by the covered drop-off, and the other being the doors to the sanctuary on Armistead Ave.
  • Do you make any accommodations for people with disabilities?
We are committed to making our church accessible to everyone. Many of our accessible features were part of our "Now All Can Come" campaign, completed during renovations in 1999. Here's what we currently offer: Parking and Drop-Off: Handicap-accessible parking spots (standard and van accessible) are available in the Victoria Blvd parking lot, along with a covered drop-off area. Restrooms: Our first-floor restrooms are equipped with wheelchair-accessible stalls. Elevator Access: An elevator is available for access to all floors of the building. Fellowship Hall: This space includes family tables and rowed seating with removable chairs to accommodate different needs. Sanctuary: Two areas in the sanctuary feature cutouts and modified pews, providing spacious seating for wheelchairs. Large Print Bulletins: For those with visual impairments, we offer large print bulletins. Please ask an usher if you need one. Hearing devices: We offer hearing devices for our 11 AM service. Please reach out to an usher if you would like one. Please, do not hesitate to let us know if there are any other accommodations that may be helpful for you or your family.
  • How many people attend worship?
The contemporary service attendance is between 45 and 60, while the traditional service is between 60 and 85.
  • Can I take communion?
Jesus Christ is the host at communion. It is He who invites everyone to the Table. All believers are welcomed to the feast. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month.
  • Will I have to do anything during worship?
You are invited to participate as fully in our worship as you feel comfortable. There are several times in worship where the congregation is invited to stand, including for singing songs, certain prayers, the affirmation of faith, and the doxology. You are invited to meet and greet other worshipers during the “Passing of the Peace” at each service.
  • How can I join the church?
By affirming (or reaffirming) your faith in Jesus Christ. There is no examination nor required classes (although we do offer newcomer classes to help people learn more about our church and its activities). If not already baptized, the person making a profession of faith shall be baptized. Simply let the Pastor know you would like to join, and he will assist you.
  • How do I get involved?
Let us know what your interests are! We will extend an invitation to join as many groups as you wish, whether it be musical, spiritual development, serving others, throwing a party, or even starting a new interest group. Being a community of faith can take many shapes, and we are always seeking ways to enrich our faith.
  • Are refreshments available?
Coffee and doughnuts are available before and during the 9:00 service and before the 11:00 service.
